My Approach

In many aspects, I view counselling as a unique space for those who have not felt sufficiently nurtured in their day-to-day life. It is an experience of feeling held without conditions, making sense of what may otherwise feel senseless, and rebuilding trust with others and oneself. A process which may not always feel comfortable, as your beliefs may be confronted and your body may instinctively seek to protect you, but one that can have an immense impact on finding greater ease and peace in your day-to-day. In this sense, I see my role is to support you, as a co-pilot, in pacing yourself until you arrive at a tempo that feels right for you.

My orientation toward counselling is grounded in humanistic and existential approaches, which often explore doubts about meaning and an inherent sense of loneliness. Walking alongside you, I support the building of emotional regulation skills to help ground feelings that once seemed overwhelming. Together, we'll stay curious about the underlying dynamics that have made change and process feel difficult. My hope is to support the return of your agency, opening the door to positive action and a more hopeful perspective on the future. Working with couples and families, our focus shifts to addressing patterns of disconnection, rebuilding healthier boundaries, and finding more effective ways to foster intimacy, creating space where you can show up authentically with the people you love.

My journey to supporting others, as with many, originated in my own experience of growing up in a single-parent family, where strong emotions were silently present. Acknowledging the inevitable pain we all experience once led me to disappointment. However, this field has shown me that it is in those very moments of struggle, when we learn to make meaning from our pain, that resilience emerges and transformation becomes possible.

  • Hi! My name is Cheng-En (誠恩), which means sincerity and gratitude in Mandarin. I am a Taiwanese queer immigrant who relocated to Turtle Island in 2023. Unlike most people in Taiwan, I grew up in Kinmen (Quemoy), an offshore island of about 60,000 people that once stood as a military frontline during the Cold War following the Chinese Civil War. Growing up listening to older adults in my family recount their lived experiences under militarization, I developed a deep interest in history and geopolitics. This interest has guided my passion for conveying a broader longing for peace through local initiatives, including co-developing a community-based walking tour that introduces how this history has shaped the collective memory of people on Kinmen Island. Before moving to Canada, I also engaged in street advocacy during Taiwan’s same-sex marriage debates and was dedicated to building a queer community in my hometown, hoping that one day no one there would need to carry a closet.

While navigating my immigrant journey, volleyball has become a grounding force that brings me joy and confidence. Rather than hitting the ball myself, I feel more pride in seeing my teammates “fly” and spike the balls I set for them.
