My Approach

Reaching out to talk to someone about what’s going on in your life, about who you are—this is a courageous, vulnerable step. It’s a privilege to be able to sit with you and hear your story, and I’m committed to doing so in a way that honours the initiative you’re taking. You are the expert in your own life; you know you better than anyone else does. I’ve had the privilege to live many lives already, and I’ve followed an unconventional career path to get here. I know that life doesn’t always take the direct route; there are twists and turns. I’m here to witness and learn, and I’ll do so from a place of humility and respect.

I believe that change, in therapy, begins from a place of connection, compassion, and curiosity. Whatever it is you’re working on, we’ll take the time to talk and get grounded, working around the problem as much as on it. What has happened? What have you lived through? What matters to you? I’d like to learn about you and what experiences you bring into this present moment, because your strength and your resilience emerge from all the things through which you’ve already persevered.  In our work together, we’ll honour those experiences—these are part of what makes you, you.

We’ll sit with and honour the emotion that comes up as our work unfolds. Too often, we’re told to grit our teeth and carry on through difficult feelings, or to discard them outright in favour of our “better judgment.” For me, emotion is foundational—it’s not just a signpost to what matters, but often, it is itself the thing that matters. We’ll co-create a space where it’s safe to feel, and as our work deepens, we can approach the emotional experiences that have felt inaccessible, forbidden. What are these emotions? What are they saying? Let’s listen together.

  • Hi—I’m Matt. Who am I? I have different answers, depending on the context. I’m a husband and a father. A student therapist. A cisgender man stepping tentatively into middle age. A resident of the Sunshine Coast, and a descendant of uninvited European settlers. A friend to many, a son, a brother, and more. A runner, an ocean swimmer, and a lover of small birds.

I appreciate that identities can be confusing and contradictory. When I run, I never forget what it was like to be the slowest kid in gym class—twelve years old, at war with my body. When I think about the privilege afforded me by my straight-presenting family role, I wonder how I can show up in a way that honours the complexity of who I am. When I talk about my work as an intern therapist, I remember the other career paths I’ve followed and how they could have led to many other places—but they led here, and for that, I’m grateful. I’m looking forward to meeting you.
